About stent angioplasty

About stent angioplasty

Stent angioplasty is a minimally invasive medical procedure used to open narrowed or blocked coronary arteries, restoring blood flow to the heart muscle.

The Elytis Hospitalyou benefit from state-of-the-art technology and an experienced medical team dedicated to your cardiovascular health.

What is stent angioplasty?

A stent angioplasty is a procedure used to treat coronary artery disease, a condition in which plaque builds up inside the coronary arteries, narrowing them and reducing blood flow to the heart. This reduced blood flow can cause chest pain (angina pectoris), shortness of breath and, in severe cases, a heart attack.

During stent angioplasty, a thin catheter with a small balloon at the tip is inserted into an artery, usually in the leg or arm, and guided to the affected coronary artery. The balloon is then inflated, compressing the plaque against the artery walls and widening its diameter. A stent, a small tube made of metal or bioresorbable material, is then placed in the artery to keep it open and prevent re-infarction.

Types of stents

The Elytis Hospitalwe are dedicated to providing the best treatment options for our patients. That is why we use state-of-the-art drug-eluting stents, which have demonstrated excellent long-term results. These stents gradually release a drug that prevents the formation of scar tissue inside the artery, reducing the risk of re-growth.

Also at Elytis Hospital, you can benefit from the latest generation of stents - bioresorbable stents. These stents dissolve completely in the body in about 2 years after implantation, eliminating the need for a permanent foreign body in the artery. Bioresorbable stents offer a number of benefits, including:

  • Restoration of the artery's natural functionality: once the stent is resorbed, the artery regains its flexibility and ability to expand and contract naturally.
  • Low re-intervention rate: studies have shown that bioresorbable stents are associated with a lower re-intervention rate compared to conventional metallic stents.
  • Less aggressive post-procedure treatment: patients who receive bioresorbable stents may require a shorter period of treatment with antiplatelet drugs.
