Computed Tomography
1. What is a CT scan?
Computed Tomography (CT) is a diagnostic test that combines X-rays with advanced technology to produce clear, detailed images of the body's organs. It is a noninvasive method for diagnosing certain diseases.
2. Modern equipment: SOMATON Definition Edge 128
The SOMATOM Definition Edge 128 is equipped with new FAST CARE group technology that streamlines workflows during scanning and image reconstruction, while maintaining the lowest possible radiation dose. This system enables the performance of the full range of medical imaging examinations in computed tomography, including cardiological and angiographic examinations.
3. What every patient needs to know before a CT scan.
A CT scan provides quick and accurate information and allows doctors to view images of the inside of the body, including internal structures, from any angle. It is a painless procedure and is sometimes performed with or without a contrast agent.
4. Preparing for a CT Scan
- For a CT scan with contrast, serum urea and creatinine test results are required, and these must not be more than 30 days old.
- For a CT scan with contrast, the patient must NOT eat or drink anything for 4 hours before the exam.
- Patients who are allergic and are undergoing a CT scan with contrast dye must provide an allergist's clearance for the contrast dye.
- For a CT scan of the pelvis and abdomen, bowel preparation is performed one day in advance; ideally, this should be discussed beforehand with the doctor who ordered the test.
- It is recommended that the patient arrive 20–30 minutes before the test.
- Females:
- They must not be pregnant; if there are delays in the menstrual cycle, a pregnancy test is recommended before deciding to proceed with imaging.
- If a woman is breastfeeding, it is recommended that she stop breastfeeding for 24 hours after undergoing a CT scan, if contrast dye is used.
- There will be an alarm button to be used in case the patient feels unwell or can no longer tolerate being in the machine.
5. Required Documents
- On the day of the examination, the patient should go to the hospital reception desk with the following documents:
- The Newsletter;
- copies of all medical documents related to the period under investigation;
- medical letter;
- medical history (if applicable);
- referral form or medical referral;
- Health card;
- Blood tests: serum urea and creatinine (if applicable).
