Ultrasound
1. What is ultrasound?
Ultrasound (UZ or USG - ultrasonography) is a commonly used imaging investigation that uses ultrasound to visualize internal organs, blood vessels or soft tissues in real time. It uses no radiation, is completely painless and has no side effects. It is recommended both for diagnosis and for monitoring conditions or treatments.
2. What every patient should know before an ultrasound scan
Ultrasound is a quick and safe procedure. Depending on the area under investigation, it may require specific preparation. It is important that the patient wears comfortable clothes and follows any instructions given by the referring doctor. The examination is performed by a medical specialist and the result may be given immediately or within a short time.
3. Preparing for ultrasound
- Abdominal ultrasound (adults or minors): Rest for at least 6 hours. Avoid smoking and chewing gum.
- Pelvic / endovaginal / scrotal / inguinal ultrasound: it is recommended to drink 500-1000 ml of water 1 hour before, without urinating, so that the bladder is full.
- Obstetric ultrasounds (first, second, third trimester) and twin ultrasounds: These are performed on the gynecologist's recommendation and can include 2D and 3D images.
- Thyroid, testicular, breast, soft tissue, musculoskeletal ultrasound: No training required.
- It is recommended that the patient arrives 15-20 minutes before the scheduled time.
4. Necessary documents
The patient must present the following documents at the reception desk:
- Identity card (CI);
- Copies of relevant medical documents;

The full list can be consulted at reception or recommended by your specialist.
